Oxford

The Creative Writing conference at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University, on February 15th, was stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable.  Here's me on the panel discussion about the role of Creative Writing in Education.  The novelist Gabriel Josipovoci argued quite vehemently against Masters degrees in Writing because of the way they inculcate false hopes of literary success in the would-be writer.  Having done a Masters in Writing myself, I couldn't wholeheartedly support his argument, though I do feel that students on such courses - and more importantly, prospective students - should be made aware that there might be other goals, other career options and other measures of success than that one golden apple of getting published.

Of course, I fell in love with Oxford again.  I hadn't been back for twenty two years!  It was great to show Robin how cute St. Edmund Hall was and to introduce him to Lucy.  I still feel like I belong to the place.
